I was stuffing Charlie’s smelly hockey equipment into his big hockey bag when I heard Susanne from the other room.

Despite my initial rant, Charlie’s week of hockey camp was great. He had a blast. Once we settled into the routine and got the lay of the land, everything went more smoothly. After a week of tagging along with the hockey counselors all over the Princeton campus and dealing with some very badly behaved 7 and 8 year olds, I’m happy to get back...
The thing swooped into the living room like a pterodactyl while I watched TV and Susanne worked on the laptop.

Greetings from the night shift. I’m taking the first shift and Susanne is taking the next. It’s 12:30 am and Charlie is 366. Not sure what’s going on. Though, being that it’s a new site and he didn’t eat anything out of the ordinary, I’ve narrowed it down to either a growth spurt or some sort of illness brewing.

I’m sitting here in the waiting room while Charlie is in with the therapist talking about his obsessive compulsive behavior. I’m wondering if it’s a requirement for waiting rooms in doctors offices to have bad art on the walls and bad music playing.

There is a box sitting in my mud room from Medtronic. It’s a box that contains something really exciting and slightly terrifying. Charlie has seen the box and its contents. He’s seen the size of the needle and he wants to go ahead with it anyway. He asks me every day if I’ve called to set up some sort of training in how to hook this baby up....

Sometimes I just have a bad feeling and I prepare myself for those three words that I hate to hear – “He’s really high.” Sometimes the anticipation is awful.

The X-ray of Charlie’s belly went fine. He stood in the middle of the room, holding the back of his gown together and smiling nervously as the X-ray machines were thrust into motion.

“So much drama,” the hockey dad said to me, scuttling his son back onto the ice.

– If the computer support guys at work can remote into my PC and take control of my cursor from 100 miles away, why can’t I remote into Charlie’s pump while he’s in school? That would be a handy upgrade to pump technology, wouldn’t it? While we’re at it, why not allow for webcam functionality so that when Charlie looks down at his...
This was going to be the year that I just took a pass on the fundraising; closed down Charlie’s Angels until next year. I just felt burnt out. We’ve done lots of fundraising for JDRF since Charlie’s diagnosis. It’s hard to get up for it every year; especially knowing that with it comes much rejection and wasted energy. It’s also tough to...
